FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. -- It's been a tough few months for A Child's Place CASA, LTD., a non-profit which helps abused and neglected children.
That changed Wednesday, when officials finally celebrated a move into a bigger facility – one purchase from Tri-State Medical in Follansbee -- with the goal to be fully operating by the end of July.
Through grant money, they bought the building for $8,000, with Executive Director Rhonda Stubbs saying the value of the building far exceeds the price.
When you step inside the building, you'll find there's more to be done. You'll also see how far they've come.
“The relief,” Stubbs said, “it's monumental.”
Late nights of demolition, construction, and thankfully for the non-profit, much of the equipment and materials were donated.
"We really enjoyed working with Rhonda,” said Youth Works volunteer out of Pennsylvania Krista Fox. “From the little bit we've worked with, you her can tell she has real heart and passion for these children. That's our heart as youth leaders."
Judge Martin Gaughan, given the honor and the scissors for the ribbon-cutting, stressed the importance of the vital services CASA provides.
“These neglect cases are not fun,” Gaughan said. “They take a lot of work and CASA just makes it a lot easier for me personally."
The 3,000-square foot space is an upgrade from their previous location in Wellsburg, which they were evicted from in December.
The new building features several rooms to house office space and a back-room kitchen. Once it's fully renovated, it'll a great supervised visitation space, complete with a kitchen table so families can come around and gather in a more natural setting.
"The room they meet in now in the state room is very small,” Stubbs said. “Some of the families are large and they don't have enough space. There’s also no table space to share a meal as a family or play a game as a family."
