BROOKE COUNTY, Ohio -- Officials with the Brooke County Sheriff's Department say they are seeing more homicides than they have in more than 20 years.
The most recent crime in the county involves a juvenile who killed a man. Officials say they are not sure why homicide has become so prevalent in an area that used to see little to no violence. In the past 14 months, Sheriff Charles Jackson and his team have been extraordinarily busy.
“What's transpired in Brooke County is they've had four murders in Brooke County,” Jackson said. “We've had three of them to investigate; Weirton PD has one in this county in the past 14 months."
But it wasn't always that way.
“If you had a murder every 10 years, that was probably the status quo,” Jackson said.
That was years ago. Now the sheriff recalls the most recent crimes that have left communities shocked, to say the least.
"We had one on Tent Church Road just a couple months ago, and most recently, we've had tragically enough the one involving the juvenile here in Brooke County 2 weeks ago," he said.
It’s a tragedy still fresh in the mind of people who live in the area where it happened. Jackson says he's not sure what is to blame for the recent spike in crimes.
"These murders, the ones we've worked, there are no indications of drug-related, no indications of crime, robbery being the motive, or anything of that nature, they just happened,” he said. “I think you have the people who committed these murders for whatever reason just became violent and killed someone."
Jackson said he hopes the spike in crime is something that will go away. In the meantime, the Sherriff’s Department just added two new officers. This comes after the department lost four deputies.
