NEW CUMBERLAND - After weeks of searching for Anthony "Tony" Pittman, authorities believe the body of the local teen was found during a ground search Monday.
Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher said a Search and Rescue team out of Tyler County was called to assist deputies, local volunteer fire fighters and representatives from the Hancock Office of Emergency Management to conduct another ground search in the local area.
Fletcher said the canine team successfully located the body believed to be Pittman's in a small, steep ravine in a wooded area approximately 300 yards from the family's property.
"We received several leads over the past month including claims of speaking to the young man, information on his whereabouts through our anonymous Tip411 application and even sightings which took our investigation into North Carolina prompting aerial and ground searches locally and abroad," he said, noting the sheriff's office, OEM and local volunteers were utilized in the search.
After exhausting all possible leads, Fletcher said the sheriff's office decided to go back to the beginning and bring in the search and rescue team with canines specializing in scent tracking and location of human remains.
"We have notified Anthony Pittman's family of the possibility that his body was recovered," he said.
Although evidence recovered in the immediate area suggests the body is that of Pittman, according to Fletcher, detectives traveled to Charleston to gain additional information into the cause of the death and positive identification from the West Virginia Medical Examiner's Office.
