Shoplifting arrest uncovers additional crimes, suspect

Updated: Monday, April 7 2014, 05:54 PM EDT

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- What first began as a shoplifting incident in Belmont County over the weekend quickly resulted in an investigation that spanned state lines.
As a result, Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas praised his deputies for "going beyond" during a search in which he said could have just resulted in charges stemming from a shoplifting for 30-year-old Lander Lee Nettles.
But it was during that search that investigators discovered they had a wanted woman from two different agencies across the river in West Virginia.
"They knew it wasn't a typical shoplifter they had," Lucas said.
It happened around 8 p.m. Saturday.
"(We) interviewed her, interrogated her, got consent to search, searched the car, found identification of a male which led to Benwood and solving these other crimes."
Among those "other crimes" Lucas was speaking of is a home invasion in Benwood, W.Va. that was allegedly also committed by Nettles. Police believe Arthur Harvey, 58, of Wheeling was part of that crime.
Lucas says deputies recovered cocaine inside Nettles' vehicle during a search.
Nettles is facing a slew of charges in Belmont County: Theft related to the shoplifting, obstructing official business, possession of drug abuse instruments, and possession of drugs in the form of cocaine.
Meanwhile, Benwood police officers said they have charged Nettles with felony burglary and misdemeanors of petit larceny and destruction of property.
NEWS9 has also learned Nettles is also wanted in Wheeling for a bond revocation.
Harvey, meanwhile, is believed to be living in Wheeling. He has a felony warrant out for burglary. Police are asking for the public's help in locating Harvey. If you see him, please contact your local police department with his whereabouts or call Benwood Police at (304) 232-2121, or you can call our Crimebusters tipline at 1800-862-BUST.
