A Belmont County man indicted by a grand jury was arraigned on charges he killed a toddler in Bellaire.

Ian Jarrell pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and endangering a child. Police said Jarrell abused and suffocated 2-year-old Carter Caprita.

On Oct. 1, emergency responders were called to the Francis Wallace Apartments for a report of a child who was not breathing. Crews found Caprita and took him to a hospital, but the child later died.

Jarrell was dating the child's mother, Allisha Alltop, and Jarrell was babysitting at the time.

Assistant Prosecutor Dan Fry explained why Jarrell is charge with two counts of murder.

"It's a charge under two different theories. One count alleged the death was caused by him abusing the child. The other charge alleges he caused the death by restraining the child which led to the death," Fry said. "Ultimately, the jury will then decide which is applicable. The other would go away essentially."

Jarrell is scheduled to be back in court Friday morning, and his trial is set to start Dec. 17.
