MARTINS FERRY, Ohio --

A woman who worked in the Martins Ferry Water Department is accused of stealing money from the city building.

Holly Dalton, of Martins Ferry, is charged with theft in office after prosecutors said she took more than $35,000.

Assistant Prosecutor Dan Fry said the charges were filed on Friday. Fry said state auditors realized what appeared to be a discrepancy in the Water Department's receipts earlier this year. That led to an investigation which looked back to 2010, which is when Dalton allegedly started embezzling money.

Fry said he was "shocked, in a sense."

"I mean, the city is out $35,000 but, you know, we see these types of embezzlements somewhat regularly here and it's just part of life anymore, unfortunately," he said.

If convicted, Dalton faces a prison sentence, said Fry, as well as thousands of dollars in fines, court-ordered restitution and could be barred for life from holding public employment.
