Bridgeport Mayor, Council at odds on Clean-up Day

BRIDGEPORT, Ohio – There’s more controversy in Bridgeport, and once again it involves the mayor and members of the Village Council.
The mayor says the phone in his office has been ringing off the hook this week.
Why?
Well, several residents said the confusion started last week. They said dates were advertised in a local newspaper article for Cleanup Week and those were for next week.
But it turns out that was a miscommunication.
Regardless, Mayor John Callarik blamed the Garbage and Refuse Committee as well as Council President Dave Smith for the delays. Smith said the committee is working hard to get a date established.
Regardless, the Mayor had some choice words for those members because, as he said, he has handled Cleanup Week in years past.
“How can the people out there know what they're doing if the committee don't know what they're doing?” he asked. “If I was handling that job, it would've been gone and picked up. It's not me as the Mayor. I know what I'm doing.”
"I apologize for the inconvenience, the misinformation that is getting out,” Smith said. “If there was any grief, I think a lot of this could have been handled behind closed doors. No reason to have our housekeeping done in the public eye."
The delay was prompted by new information surfacing from the Mayor’s office at last week’s council meeting.
That's when members of council learned that village employees could not be used for the clean-up.
That, of course prompted, a search for a private company. That's what is happening right now.
Officials say Clean-up Week is not likely to happen next week.
