The Wheeling Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that took place 12:21 a.m., Wednesday morning at the Marathon gas station on National Road in Elm Grove.

It's the second armed robbery in the city in two weeks.

Surveillance video shows a man walking in and pointing a gun at the cashier as other customers are inside the store. The clerk puts his hands up, and the robber walks behind the register and starts taking the cash.

The shocking thing about the crime is that patrons were oblivious to the robbery happening right in front of them. The suspect was masked and still carrying the gun as people were shopping, and he left with the gun in his hand, even passing a patron on the way out.

“Typically an armed robbery happens pretty quick, so we are not sure if they did hear something,” Wheeling Police Department Public Information Officer Philip Stahl said. “We are still in the process of interviewing them."

The suspect is described as a white male, average build 5-foot-8 in height, blonde hair, wearing a grey hoodie, red bandana over his face and a toboggan.

Detectives don't believe the two robberies are related -- Wednesday morning's involved a gun, the other involved a knife -- but do say it may be an indication of the drug problem in the Ohio Valley getting even more severe.
